Sidmouth nestles between the majestic sandstone cliffs of the Jurassic coastline and the green valley of the River Sid. It has two delightful pebble beaches which give way to golden sand and rock pools at low tide.

Those wishing to take a gentle walk can stroll along the Esplanade, through the Connaught Gardens or along the parkland known as the "Byes". More energetic walkers could tackle the 500 feet high Peak Hill, Salcombe Hill or follow the coastal path.

Sidmouth has a maritime history, from a traditional small fishing fleet to notable personalities such as Commander John Carslake who served as a midshipman on Nelson's flagship "HMS Victory" at the Battle of Trafalgar. It also became a fashionable resort for the gentry in early 19th century, especially since the future Queen Victoria visited Sidmouth as a baby on holiday, and the Regency architecture can still be seen today.

The Connaught gardens contain a fine range of herbaceous plants which thrive in the temperate climate. The gardens are also used for a wide range of cultural activities including music, drama and art where the bandstand set in green lawn provides a superb environment.

Sidmouth also offers a wide range of sporting facilities including bowls, cricket, golf, fishing and pony treking.  Details of these can be found through the local tourist information office.
